Functional Medicine & Naturopathic doctor in Northern Virginia
Struggling with fatigue, hormone changes, weight gain or symptoms that just won’t fully resolve?
We take a more complete, personalized approach to uncovering what’s driving your symptoms — so you can finally start feeling like yourself again.
Five months ago, when I started with Dr. Johnson at Thrive Naturopathic, I wasn’t feeling like myself at all. My energy was low, my mood was off, and I just knew something wasn’t right. It was frustrating and honestly a little discouraging.
Today, I can say I feel like a completely different person. My energy is back, my mood has lifted, and for the first time in a long time, I genuinely feel good—inside and out. It’s hard to put into words how much that means.
Dr. Johnson didn’t just treat symptoms—he listened, he cared, and he guided me every step of the way. I never felt like just another patient. I felt supported, understood, and truly taken care of.
This journey has been life-changing for me. I’m beyond grateful, and I can honestly say this program has done what feels like miracles in my life.
If you’re struggling or unsure, I hope my story encourages you to take that first step. It might just change everything for you, too.
After struggling with persistent health issue for months, I finally feel like myself again. Dr. Johnson took the time to look at the root cause of my symptoms rather than just treating them superficially. Dr. Johnson's approach was thoughtful, thorough, and personalized, and I always felt heard and supported throughout the process.
I’m so grateful for the progress I’ve made and would highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic to anyone!
I went to Thrive Naturopathic in 2024 because I was struggling with my health and wasn’t getting answers from Western medicine. I was told everything was “fine” and that it was likely just anxiety, so I turned to Thrive hoping for real answers based on their positive reviews.
I stayed in the program for about 8 months before deciding to leave. In my experience, the program mainly focused on dietary changes and brain training techniques. While those can be helpful, the cost is extremely high for what’s actually being offered. The initial testing also felt very basic- no different from what you’d get at a standard doctor’s appointment, which is disappointing given how much they charge.
After leaving, I went to another holistic practitioner who did much more extensive bloodwork. That’s when I found out I actually had underlying issues that Thrive couldn't indentify. I started feeling better within two weeks of proper treatment, whereas at Thrive I felt worse over time and was repeatedly told to “be patient” and that “healing doesn’t happen overnight.” Again, I waited 8 months before I decided to leave.
I strongly encourage others to do thorough research before committing to such an expensive program. For comparison, my current holistic provider charges significantly less and provided far more thorough care.
This experience definitely made me more cautious about trusting online reviews.
This program provides so much helpful advice and the staff are incredibly supportive. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, and Halicia were AMAZING to work with - they are true professionals that really care! Joy was always quick to respond and send remedies along the way.
I am so glad I signed up for the program I did; I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic for anyone dealing with diminished health!
My time at Thrive has fundamentally changed my relationship with food, stressors, and how I view my body and overall health. I’ve never felt more understood or supported, and I’m genuinely grateful for the impact they’ve had on my life. Highly recommend!
When I reached out to Thrive last year, I suffered from poor sleep, weight gain, low energy, and increased irritability. I have a great wife and family, yet when I showed up on Thrive’s doorstep I was far from being the husband and father they deserved. I’ve always been in good shape both physically and mentally, but life with four young kids (my oldest is 7) caused me to cut corners with my diet and exercise, and I was beginning to pay a steep price for it. Something had to change.
That’s when I reached out to Dr. Chris and his team at Thrive Naturopathic. The program they’ve developed and the support they provided is nothing less than outstanding! The program is broken down into very manageable blocks with measurable and attainable goals and objectives. And best of all, they assign a coach to help with any extra motivation or information you may need along the way.
I recommend that you call them to learn more about the program to determine if it’s a good fit for you. I will tell you that one year later I have a better overall attitude, more energy, better sleep and less weight—all thanks to Thrive. My only advice is that you don’t wait as long as I did to make that call. Good luck!
Working with Thrive changed everything. Their naturopath truly took the time to get to the root cause of my issues, not just mask the symptoms. I’ve learned how to take better care of myself in a way that feels sustainable and supportive of my long term health. Now, I move through my days with so much more energy and clarity. My digestion has improved drastically, and I finally feel like myself again.
I’m beyond grateful for Thrive Naturopathic. They care deeply and it shows. This program was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health and well being.
As each week passed, I lost weight, had more energy, and, most importantly, gained confidence in myself. By the fall, I lost 55 pounds, and lowered my cholesterol by nearly 100 points. My doctors took me off all of the medications that they had previously told me I would be on for the rest of my life. When I asked these doctors why, they said it was because I made lifestyle changes that 99.9 percent of people don’t make.
Today, I still largely stick to my new healthy diet. I exercise regularly and more recently I started playing hockey again, something I never thought would be possible. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, Halicia, and the rest of the team helped me become a better dad, husband, son, brother, friend, and co-worker. I’m forever grateful and cannot say enough positive things about Thrive Naturopathic.
I knew that traditional medicine wouldn't work for me anymore so I started looking into alternatives. Then I found Thrive Naturopathic. The team there is amazing! They listened carefully to all my symptoms, from the weight gain to the skin issues. It felt like they genuinely cared about helping me feel better.
After working with them, they created a personalized approach just for me. It wasn't a quick fix, but slowly but surely, things started to change. I started losing weight, and for the first time in years, I got my period back! My eczema completely cleared up, and my acne is almost gone. But the best part? I have so much more energy now. It feels like I have a whole new lease on life!
If you're struggling with PCOS and feel like nothing is working, I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic. They took the time to understand my unique situation and helped me get back to feeling like myself again. Thank you, Thrive Naturopathic!

An In-Depth, Root Cause Approach To Your Health
Content by Dr. Christopher Johnson, ND | Founder of Thrive Naturopathic
If you’re looking for a functional medicine doctor, you’re probably searching for more than a diagnosis or another prescription. You want to understand why you’re dealing with symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, hormone imbalances, digestive problems, brain fog or poor sleep—and what you can do to improve them.
At Thrive Naturopathic, we combine functional medicine with naturopathic medicine to look beyond isolated symptoms and identify the underlying factors affecting your health. Whether you’re struggling with metabolic health, hormones, digestion, stress, or inflammation, our goal is to help you understand what’s happening in your body and develop a clear, personalized plan for lasting improvement.
Over the past 18 years, I’ve worked with more than 3,000 patients, and one lesson has remained remarkably consistent: lasting health rarely comes from chasing individual symptoms. It comes from understanding—and addressing—the bigger picture.
How Our Approach works
By the time someone comes into my Alexandria or McLean office, they’ve often seen numerous doctors and been told everything is “normal,” yet they continue to struggle with fatigue, weight changes, hormone symptoms, sleep disruption, or ongoing discomfort.
In my time in practice, I’ve found that these symptoms are rarely isolated. They are usually part of deeper, interconnected patterns involving metabolism, hormones, digestion, and stress physiology.
Rather than addressing each symptom separately, we focus on how these systems are interacting in your specific case — allowing us to develop a plan that reflects what is actually happening in your body.
How We Are Different
At Thrive Naturopathic, our approach is designed to move beyond short-term symptom management and toward a more complete understanding of your health.
- Care is personalized to your physiology and history
- We look at how systems interact (hormones, metabolism, digestion, stress)
- We focus on underlying drivers, not just diagnoses
- We work with you over time, not just a single visit
- The goal is meaningful, sustainable improvement
What Working With Us Looks Like
Many patients come to us after trying multiple approaches without lasting results. What makes this process different is not just what we do, but how we approach your case over time.
Our goal is to understand your health at a deeper level and guide you through a structured, personalized process — not just provide isolated recommendations.
An in-depth Evaluation
We begin by looking carefully at your health history, current symptoms, and patterns over time. This helps us identify how different systems may be interacting, rather than focusing on a single diagnosis.
A Structured, Individualized Plan
Your care is built around a structured process that we guide you through step by step. This includes nutrition changes, targeted supplementation, lifestyle adjustments and specific therapeutic approaches.
While the overall framework is consistent, how your body responds — and what we prioritize — is highly individualized. This allows us to identify your specific patterns and adapt your plan based on what actually works for you.
Support and Adjustment
We work with you over time, monitoring progress and adjusting your plan as needed. This allows us to respond to how your body is actually changing, rather than relying on a fixed protocol.s
Conditions We commonly help with
Many patients come to us with symptoms that don’t seem to have a clear explanation — or that haven’t fully resolved despite previous care.
In our experience, concerns like fatigue, weight changes, hormone imbalance, digestive issues and poor sleep are often connected and influenced by deeper metabolic and stress-related patterns..
Women's Midlife Health
Hormonal changes can affect weight, sleep, mood and energy in ways that don’t always show clearly on standard labs. We look at how hormonal shifts interact with metabolism, stress response patterns, the gut/microbiome and more to better understand what’s driving your symptoms in menopause, perimenopause or other hormonal imbalances.
Men's Midlife Health
Men in their 40s, 50s and 60s often experience changes in energy, sleep, weight, stress resilience, libido and hormone balance. We look beyond testosterone alone to address the metabolic, hormonal, nervous system and lifestyle factors that can affect how you feel and function in midlife.
Weight Gain or Metabolic Changes
If your body is no longer responding the way it used to, there are often deeper metabolic and hormonal factors involved. We help identify what may be slowing things down and how to support your whole system to achieve effective and sustainable weight loss.
Sleep Disruption
Waking during the night, difficulty falling asleep or unrefreshing sleep are often connected to stress physiology, hormones or metabolic patterns. Addressing these underlying factors can help improve sleep quality over time – as we discuss extensively in our page on Stress, Sleep and Resilience.
Joint Pain
Imagine waking up every day without the burden of joint pain holding you back. At Thrive Naturopathic in Alexandria, we make that dream a reality. Joint pain can disrupt your daily life, making even the simplest tasks feel like a challenge. While conventional treatments offer temporary relief through painkillers and anti-inflammation medications, they often leave the root causes untouched, leading to long-term side effects.
Digestive Issues
Digestive symptoms can be influenced by multiple factors, including diet, stress, and gut function. We work to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and how to improve overall digestive balance.
Insulin-Resistance/Diabetes
Insulin resistance is one of the most common—but overlooked—drivers of midlife weight gain, fatigue, hormonal changes and future chronic disease. Our approach helps uncover and address the root causes so you can improve metabolic health and reduce long-term risk.
Stress-Related Symptoms
Stress isn’t just emotional—it can disrupt hormones, metabolism, digestion, immune function, and energy production. Our goal is to understand why your body is struggling to adapt and help restore a healthier, more balanced nervous system and stress response.
Skin
Your skin plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature, sensing touch and safeguarding against harmful pathogens. However, various skin conditions, such as acne, eczema and hives, can disrupt its normal function and cause discomfort and distress.
Acne
Acne is characterized by the presence of pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, often affecting the face, chest, and back. It can be a source of physical discomfort and emotional distress, impacting self-confidence. Thrive Naturopathic offers personalized wellness plans for acne by combining advanced testing and one-on-one consultations.
Eczema
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a challenging skin condition characterized by redness, itching and inflammation. It can severely affect one’s physical and emotional well-being, making it crucial to find effective solutions.
Hives
Hives, or urticaria, are itchy welts on the skin that can be uncomfortable and distressing. The functional medicine doctors at Thrive Naturopathic offer personalized wellness plans for those with hives and aim to uncover the root causes of each person’s hives. Holistic medicine approaches include balancing immune responses, stress reduction and identifying sensitivities to provide relief from the discomfort of hives.
Who This Approach Is For
This approach is designed for people who feel like something deeper is going on with their health — especially when symptoms don’t fully resolve or don’t fit into a single clear explanation.
You’ve tried to improve your health, but progress hasn’t lasted
You’ve made changes with diet, exercise or other approaches, but the results have been inconsistent — or haven’t fully addressed what you’re experiencing.
You’ve been told everything is “normal,” but you still don’t feel right
Even when labs or evaluations don’t show clear issues, you know something is off and are looking for a more complete explanation.
Your symptoms don’t seem connected — but you suspect they are
You may be dealing with fatigue, weight changes, sleep issues, or hormone-related symptoms that don’t seem related, yet feel like part of a bigger pattern.
You’re open to a structured process — not just a quick fix
You’re willing to work through a guided process over time, with support and adjustments, rather than relying on short-term or one-size-fits-all solutions.
You may not have a clear diagnosis — but you know something isn’t fully adding up.

The first step is to schedule your free, 15-minute Discovery Call. From there, we determine whether a more comprehensive evaluation and personalized program is the right next step for you.
What types of patients do you typically work with?
We work with adults experiencing ongoing health concerns, especially those related to fatigue, metabolism, hormones, digestion and stress-related symptoms. Many of our patients come to us after trying other approaches without lasting results.
Do I need a specific diagnosis to work with you?
No. Many patients come to us because they feel something is off, even if they haven’t received a clear diagnosis. We focus on understanding patterns in your symptoms and physiology rather than relying solely on diagnostic labels.
What is your approach to treatment?
We use a structured, program-based approach that may include nutrition, lifestyle changes, targeted supplementation, and other supportive therapies. While the overall framework is consistent, your plan is adjusted based on how your body responds over time.
How is this different from conventional medical care?
Conventional care often focuses on diagnosing and managing individual conditions. Our approach looks at how different systems interact — such as hormones, metabolism, digestion, and stress — to understand what may be contributing to ongoing symptoms.
How long does it typically take to see results?
This depends on the individual and the complexity of the case. Some patients notice changes within a few weeks, while others require a longer, more gradual process. Our focus is on meaningful, sustainable improvement over time.
Do you work with patients locally or virtually?
We are based in Alexandria, Virginia and serve patients throughout Northern Virginia and the surrounding region. Many patients choose to work with us both in person and virtually, allowing for flexibility while maintaining continuity of care.
We also work with patients fully virtually when appropriate, making our approach accessible even if you are not located locally.
