The Midlife Reset in northern Virginia
Why Your body changes in Midlife — and How to Turn It Around
Midlife doesn’t have to be the beginning of decline—it’s an opportunity to restore your body’s foundation, adapt to the changes ahead and build the energy and resilience you’ll rely on for decades to come.
Five months ago, when I started with Dr. Johnson at Thrive Naturopathic, I wasn’t feeling like myself at all. My energy was low, my mood was off, and I just knew something wasn’t right. It was frustrating and honestly a little discouraging.
Today, I can say I feel like a completely different person. My energy is back, my mood has lifted, and for the first time in a long time, I genuinely feel good—inside and out. It’s hard to put into words how much that means.
Dr. Johnson didn’t just treat symptoms—he listened, he cared, and he guided me every step of the way. I never felt like just another patient. I felt supported, understood, and truly taken care of.
This journey has been life-changing for me. I’m beyond grateful, and I can honestly say this program has done what feels like miracles in my life.
If you’re struggling or unsure, I hope my story encourages you to take that first step. It might just change everything for you, too.
After struggling with persistent health issue for months, I finally feel like myself again. Dr. Johnson took the time to look at the root cause of my symptoms rather than just treating them superficially. Dr. Johnson's approach was thoughtful, thorough, and personalized, and I always felt heard and supported throughout the process.
I’m so grateful for the progress I’ve made and would highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic to anyone!
I went to Thrive Naturopathic in 2024 because I was struggling with my health and wasn’t getting answers from Western medicine. I was told everything was “fine” and that it was likely just anxiety, so I turned to Thrive hoping for real answers based on their positive reviews.
I stayed in the program for about 8 months before deciding to leave. In my experience, the program mainly focused on dietary changes and brain training techniques. While those can be helpful, the cost is extremely high for what’s actually being offered. The initial testing also felt very basic- no different from what you’d get at a standard doctor’s appointment, which is disappointing given how much they charge.
After leaving, I went to another holistic practitioner who did much more extensive bloodwork. That’s when I found out I actually had underlying issues that Thrive couldn't indentify. I started feeling better within two weeks of proper treatment, whereas at Thrive I felt worse over time and was repeatedly told to “be patient” and that “healing doesn’t happen overnight.” Again, I waited 8 months before I decided to leave.
I strongly encourage others to do thorough research before committing to such an expensive program. For comparison, my current holistic provider charges significantly less and provided far more thorough care.
This experience definitely made me more cautious about trusting online reviews.
This program provides so much helpful advice and the staff are incredibly supportive. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, and Halicia were AMAZING to work with - they are true professionals that really care! Joy was always quick to respond and send remedies along the way.
I am so glad I signed up for the program I did; I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic for anyone dealing with diminished health!
My time at Thrive has fundamentally changed my relationship with food, stressors, and how I view my body and overall health. I’ve never felt more understood or supported, and I’m genuinely grateful for the impact they’ve had on my life. Highly recommend!
When I reached out to Thrive last year, I suffered from poor sleep, weight gain, low energy, and increased irritability. I have a great wife and family, yet when I showed up on Thrive’s doorstep I was far from being the husband and father they deserved. I’ve always been in good shape both physically and mentally, but life with four young kids (my oldest is 7) caused me to cut corners with my diet and exercise, and I was beginning to pay a steep price for it. Something had to change.
That’s when I reached out to Dr. Chris and his team at Thrive Naturopathic. The program they’ve developed and the support they provided is nothing less than outstanding! The program is broken down into very manageable blocks with measurable and attainable goals and objectives. And best of all, they assign a coach to help with any extra motivation or information you may need along the way.
I recommend that you call them to learn more about the program to determine if it’s a good fit for you. I will tell you that one year later I have a better overall attitude, more energy, better sleep and less weight—all thanks to Thrive. My only advice is that you don’t wait as long as I did to make that call. Good luck!
Working with Thrive changed everything. Their naturopath truly took the time to get to the root cause of my issues, not just mask the symptoms. I’ve learned how to take better care of myself in a way that feels sustainable and supportive of my long term health. Now, I move through my days with so much more energy and clarity. My digestion has improved drastically, and I finally feel like myself again.
I’m beyond grateful for Thrive Naturopathic. They care deeply and it shows. This program was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health and well being.
As each week passed, I lost weight, had more energy, and, most importantly, gained confidence in myself. By the fall, I lost 55 pounds, and lowered my cholesterol by nearly 100 points. My doctors took me off all of the medications that they had previously told me I would be on for the rest of my life. When I asked these doctors why, they said it was because I made lifestyle changes that 99.9 percent of people don’t make.
Today, I still largely stick to my new healthy diet. I exercise regularly and more recently I started playing hockey again, something I never thought would be possible. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, Halicia, and the rest of the team helped me become a better dad, husband, son, brother, friend, and co-worker. I’m forever grateful and cannot say enough positive things about Thrive Naturopathic.
I knew that traditional medicine wouldn't work for me anymore so I started looking into alternatives. Then I found Thrive Naturopathic. The team there is amazing! They listened carefully to all my symptoms, from the weight gain to the skin issues. It felt like they genuinely cared about helping me feel better.
After working with them, they created a personalized approach just for me. It wasn't a quick fix, but slowly but surely, things started to change. I started losing weight, and for the first time in years, I got my period back! My eczema completely cleared up, and my acne is almost gone. But the best part? I have so much more energy now. It feels like I have a whole new lease on life!
If you're struggling with PCOS and feel like nothing is working, I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic. They took the time to understand my unique situation and helped me get back to feeling like myself again. Thank you, Thrive Naturopathic!

If Your Body Feels Different In Your 40s and 50s, You’re Not Imagining It
Content by Dr. Christopher Johnson, ND | Founder, Thrive Naturopathic
In my practice over the years, I’ve seen that as you get into midlife you often begin to notice a shift – and it’s not always welcome. Energy isn’t what it used to be. It’s a little harder getting up in the morning. Sleep becomes lighter. Recovery takes longer. Joints start to hurt. You may notice changes in mood or focus. And of course, maintaining your weight becomes a lot more difficult.
You realize your old habits no longer give you the same results. You’re eating the same foods, exercising regularly yet still gaining weight or feeling worse overall. It can be frustrating, confusing and easy to blame on “just getting older”.
But I’m here to tell you this situation isn’t really just “aging”. Yes, we all do get older, but what’s happening is actually a change in how your body functions beneath the surface. The good news is this decline is not inevitable – there’s a lot you can do to turn the tide. And you’re going to need to feel better if you want to be ready for the next chapter of your life.
But to do that, you have to address the underlying issues directly. Unless and until that is done, most traditional approaches and quick fixes to alleviate your symptoms will fall short.
What We Mean by "The Midlife Reset"
When I talk about “The Midlife Reset,” I’m not referring to a certain diet or short-term, one-size-fits-all program. I’m describing the philosophy that guides how I think about health during one of life’s most important transitions.
Over the past 18+ years, I’ve worked with more than 3,000 patients and I’ve noticed something remarkably consistent. People rarely come to me because of just one problem or symptom. Instead, they tell me, “something has changed”.
You’re gaining weight despite eating the same way. Energy is declining. Sleep issues, brain fog, stress, recovery, etc. You no longer feel like yourself. You might assume these are unrelated problems. But from my experience, I know they are connected.
That’s because there are fundamental forces driving all of this – primarily your stress response/nervous system patterns, immune patterns, the health of your gut/digestive tract and of course, your lifestyle and daily habits (which need to be altered during midlife). Your body is undergoing natural hormonal shifts as you enter midlife, but it is these underlying aspects of your body that are making the shifts produce symptoms.
You can’t change the fact that your hormones are shifting, but you can change the way this affects your health.
That’s what I mean by “The Midlife Reset” – it‘s not a cleanse, a detox or some sort of quick fix bio-hack. It’s a way of understanding how your body’s interconnected systems have changed—and then restoring them together, by addressing the fundamentals rather than chasing one symptom after another.
The Midlife Reset isn’t about chasing symptoms. It’s about restoring balance to these underlying systems that support your body function. When those systems are balanced and revitalized, the individual symptoms naturally improve.
Why we Focus on Midlife
People sometimes ask why our practice places so much emphasis on midlife rather than waiting until someone develops more significant health problems.
The answer is simple.
In my experience, midlife is one of the greatest opportunities to change how you’ll feel over the next 30 or 40 years.
Many of the changes people notice during this stage of life aren’t signs that their body has “failed.” They’re signals that underlying systems are having trouble adapting to a new stage of life.
The earlier this is recognized, the more opportunity there is to balance these fundamental systems (which drive our health) – to improve energy, resilience, metabolic health, hormone balance and long-term vitality.
Rather than temporarily treating symptoms and hoping for the best, this is the ideal time to get these fundamental systems balanced – so the body can function at its best for the decades ahead.
My goal isn’t simply to help you get through your 40s or 50s. It’s to help you reinvigorate your body’s foundational systems so you can emerge from midlife with greater energy, resilience and confidence. I’ll show you how to build a stronger foundation so you can stay active, independent and healthy throughout the decades that follow.
That’s why I see midlife as such an important time to really buckle down and get yourself ready for the next chapter in your life.
What changes during Midlife
Although everyone’s experience is different, there are several common changes that begin to occur during midlife. These changes don’t happen in everyone—and they don’t all happen at once—but understanding them can help explain why your body may not respond the way it once did.
Hormones Begin to Shift
Changes in estrogen, progesterone and testosterone don’t just affect reproduction—they influence energy, sleep, mood, muscle maintenance, metabolism and how your body responds to stress. These hormonal shifts often become one of the earliest signs that your body is entering a new stage of life.
Metabolism Gets Less Flexible
Many people notice they can no longer eat or exercise the way they did in their 30s. The body often becomes less efficient at using energy and more prone to storing fat, even when daily habits haven’t changed significantly. Part of this is the tendency for insulin-resistance to increase over time.
Muscle and Recovery Change
Beginning in midlife, muscle mass and recovery gradually decline unless they’re actively supported. This can reduce strength, slow metabolism, increase the risk of injury and make it harder to stay active over time.
Sleep and Stress Become More Connected
Sleep often becomes lighter and less restorative during midlife. This is partly due to chronic stress patterns having a greater impact on hormones, energy and recovery. Addressing underlying stress patterns leads to improved sleep and greater resilience.
Brain Function and Resilience Shift
Many people notice changes in concentration, memory, motivation or mental clarity during midlife. Rather than being “just aging,” these changes are often influenced by sleep, hormones, stress physiology, nutrition and overall metabolic health.
The Body Becomes More Interconnected
One of the biggest changes I see in practice is that symptoms rarely occur in isolation. Hormones, metabolism, sleep, stress, muscle health and nutrition all influence one another. That’s why addressing a single symptom rarely leads to lasting improvement.
Every person experiences these changes differently. The important step isn’t treating each one separately—it’s understanding which combination is affecting you and addressing the underlying patterns together.

— Ann J H., Google Review
My wife and I wanted to treat the root cause of our health issues, not just mask symptoms with prescriptions. After researching functional medicine, we chose Thrive Naturopathic, and it was the best decision we could have made. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, and Halicia Jones provided the most comprehensive blood screening we’ve ever had. Through their guidance on diet, fitness, and mindfulness, we’ve both lost weight, gained energy, and feel empowered as we approach our 60s. We finally have the tools to age gracefully without ‘punishing’ ourselves. I cannot overstate the benefits of Thrive’s program.

Questions About The Midlife Reset program
What do you mean by "The Midlife Reset"?
The Midlife Reset isn’t a cleanse, detox or short-term health program. It’s a way of helping your body adapt to the natural changes that occur during midlife.
Rather than focusing on one symptom at a time, we look at the foundational systems that support your health—including your nervous system, gut, immune system and liver. When these systems function well, your body is often better able to regulate hormones, maintain energy, support a healthy metabolism and recover from the demands of daily life.
Why do so many symptoms seem to appear during midlife?
Midlife brings natural hormonal and physiological changes that every person experiences. What determines how well you move through those changes is often how resilient your body’s foundational systems are.
If the nervous system is stuck in a chronic stress response, gut function has declined, the immune system is imbalanced or the liver isn’t processing hormones and toxins efficiently, your body may have a harder time adapting. The result can be changes in energy, sleep, metabolism, mood, recovery or weight that seem unrelated—but often share common underlying drivers.
Is this mainly a weight-loss program?
No.
While having a healthy weight is important, our approach is “Get healthy to lose weight” – not the other way around.
Our focus is helping restore the underlying systems that support your body’s ability to function well. As those systems become healthier, many people notice improvements in energy, sleep, stress resilience, hormone balance, recovery and metabolism. Weight becomes easier to manage as a result—not because we’re chasing weight itself.
You can learn more about our approach on our weight loss page.
Why don't you focus on treating individual symptoms?
Because symptoms are often the result of deeper patterns within the body.
For example, poor sleep, fatigue, hormone imbalance, weight gain and brain fog may appear to be separate problems, but they can all be influenced by chronic stress physiology, gut dysfunction, immune imbalance or reduced liver function.
Rather than managing each symptom independently, we work to understand what’s driving those patterns in the first place.
Who is The Midlife Reset designed for?
It’s designed for people in their 40s, 50s and beyond who feel their body isn’t responding the way it used to.
You may not have a specific diagnosis, but you’ve noticed changes in your energy, sleep, resilience, recovery, hormones or metabolism. Many people tell me they simply “don’t feel like themselves anymore.”
A Midlife Reset is designed to help identify what’s changed beneath the surface and create a plan to strengthen the systems that support long-term health.
Yes, we do definitely work with women who come to us wanting help with menopause and perimenopause and men who are experiencing a type of mid-life burnout or decline, but you don’t have to have a specific medical diagnosis to benefit from our programs.
Why do you focus on the nervous system, gut, immune system and liver instead of just treating hormones?
Hormones don’t function in isolation. They depend on the health of the systems that regulate and support them.
In my experience, the nervous system, gut, immune system and liver form much of the body’s foundation. When these systems lose resilience, the body often has a harder time adapting to the normal hormonal changes of midlife.
By strengthening these foundational systems, we’re often able to improve many downstream symptoms—including energy, sleep, metabolism, hormone balance and overall vitality—without chasing each one individually.
