weight loss programs in northern virginia
If you’ve been doing “everything right” but still struggle to lose weight, there is often more going on beneath the surface.
Discover why your body may be resisting weight loss—and build a plan designed for lasting change rather than another short-term diet.
Five months ago, when I started with Dr. Johnson at Thrive Naturopathic, I wasn’t feeling like myself at all. My energy was low, my mood was off, and I just knew something wasn’t right. It was frustrating and honestly a little discouraging.
Today, I can say I feel like a completely different person. My energy is back, my mood has lifted, and for the first time in a long time, I genuinely feel good—inside and out. It’s hard to put into words how much that means.
Dr. Johnson didn’t just treat symptoms—he listened, he cared, and he guided me every step of the way. I never felt like just another patient. I felt supported, understood, and truly taken care of.
This journey has been life-changing for me. I’m beyond grateful, and I can honestly say this program has done what feels like miracles in my life.
If you’re struggling or unsure, I hope my story encourages you to take that first step. It might just change everything for you, too.
After struggling with persistent health issue for months, I finally feel like myself again. Dr. Johnson took the time to look at the root cause of my symptoms rather than just treating them superficially. Dr. Johnson's approach was thoughtful, thorough, and personalized, and I always felt heard and supported throughout the process.
I’m so grateful for the progress I’ve made and would highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic to anyone!
I went to Thrive Naturopathic in 2024 because I was struggling with my health and wasn’t getting answers from Western medicine. I was told everything was “fine” and that it was likely just anxiety, so I turned to Thrive hoping for real answers based on their positive reviews.
I stayed in the program for about 8 months before deciding to leave. In my experience, the program mainly focused on dietary changes and brain training techniques. While those can be helpful, the cost is extremely high for what’s actually being offered. The initial testing also felt very basic- no different from what you’d get at a standard doctor’s appointment, which is disappointing given how much they charge.
After leaving, I went to another holistic practitioner who did much more extensive bloodwork. That’s when I found out I actually had underlying issues that Thrive couldn't indentify. I started feeling better within two weeks of proper treatment, whereas at Thrive I felt worse over time and was repeatedly told to “be patient” and that “healing doesn’t happen overnight.” Again, I waited 8 months before I decided to leave.
I strongly encourage others to do thorough research before committing to such an expensive program. For comparison, my current holistic provider charges significantly less and provided far more thorough care.
This experience definitely made me more cautious about trusting online reviews.

This program provides so much helpful advice and the staff are incredibly supportive. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, and Halicia were AMAZING to work with - they are true professionals that really care! Joy was always quick to respond and send remedies along the way.
I am so glad I signed up for the program I did; I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic for anyone dealing with diminished health!

My time at Thrive has fundamentally changed my relationship with food, stressors, and how I view my body and overall health. I’ve never felt more understood or supported, and I’m genuinely grateful for the impact they’ve had on my life. Highly recommend!

When I reached out to Thrive last year, I suffered from poor sleep, weight gain, low energy, and increased irritability. I have a great wife and family, yet when I showed up on Thrive’s doorstep I was far from being the husband and father they deserved. I’ve always been in good shape both physically and mentally, but life with four young kids (my oldest is 7) caused me to cut corners with my diet and exercise, and I was beginning to pay a steep price for it. Something had to change.
That’s when I reached out to Dr. Chris and his team at Thrive Naturopathic. The program they’ve developed and the support they provided is nothing less than outstanding! The program is broken down into very manageable blocks with measurable and attainable goals and objectives. And best of all, they assign a coach to help with any extra motivation or information you may need along the way.
I recommend that you call them to learn more about the program to determine if it’s a good fit for you. I will tell you that one year later I have a better overall attitude, more energy, better sleep and less weight—all thanks to Thrive. My only advice is that you don’t wait as long as I did to make that call. Good luck!

Working with Thrive changed everything. Their naturopath truly took the time to get to the root cause of my issues, not just mask the symptoms. I’ve learned how to take better care of myself in a way that feels sustainable and supportive of my long term health. Now, I move through my days with so much more energy and clarity. My digestion has improved drastically, and I finally feel like myself again.
I’m beyond grateful for Thrive Naturopathic. They care deeply and it shows. This program was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health and well being.

As each week passed, I lost weight, had more energy, and, most importantly, gained confidence in myself. By the fall, I lost 55 pounds, and lowered my cholesterol by nearly 100 points. My doctors took me off all of the medications that they had previously told me I would be on for the rest of my life. When I asked these doctors why, they said it was because I made lifestyle changes that 99.9 percent of people don’t make.
Today, I still largely stick to my new healthy diet. I exercise regularly and more recently I started playing hockey again, something I never thought would be possible. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, Halicia, and the rest of the team helped me become a better dad, husband, son, brother, friend, and co-worker. I’m forever grateful and cannot say enough positive things about Thrive Naturopathic.

I knew that traditional medicine wouldn't work for me anymore so I started looking into alternatives. Then I found Thrive Naturopathic. The team there is amazing! They listened carefully to all my symptoms, from the weight gain to the skin issues. It felt like they genuinely cared about helping me feel better.
After working with them, they created a personalized approach just for me. It wasn't a quick fix, but slowly but surely, things started to change. I started losing weight, and for the first time in years, I got my period back! My eczema completely cleared up, and my acne is almost gone. But the best part? I have so much more energy now. It feels like I have a whole new lease on life!
If you're struggling with PCOS and feel like nothing is working, I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic. They took the time to understand my unique situation and helped me get back to feeling like myself again. Thank you, Thrive Naturopathic!

If You're Struggling to Lose Weight, It's Probably Not About Willpower
Content by Dr. Christopher Johnson, ND | Founder of Thrive Naturopathic
For many of my patients, weight gain didn’t happen overnight—and losing it isn’t as simple as eating less or exercising more. By the time someone comes to see me, at our Alexandria or Mclean clinic, they’ve often tried multiple diets, counted calories and utilized various exercise regimens, only to end up frustrated by slow progress or repeated weight regain.
In my 18+ years in practice, I’ve found that when someone has difficulty losing weight, there is usually more going on beneath the surface. Hormonal changes, insulin resistance, chronic stress, poor sleep, gut health, inflammation and other underlying factors can all influence how your body regulates metabolism, appetite and fat storage.
Rather than assuming the answer is simply more discipline, I believe the first step is understanding why your body may be resisting weight loss. Once we identify those contributing factors, we can begin building a plan that supports sustainable progress and long-term health.
what may be contributing to your weight gain
Weight gain is rarely caused by a single factor. Usually it’s the result of several systems in the body working against each other. Understanding these contributors can help explain why losing weight has become so difficult—and why a one-size-fits-all diet often falls short.
Hormonal Changes
Hormonal shifts during perimenopause, menopause and other stages of life can influence metabolism, appetite, body composition and where fat is stored. My goal isn’t simply to address the symptoms, but to understand how these changes may be affecting your body as a whole.
Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance is one of the most common reasons I see people struggle with weight loss. Even before blood sugar becomes abnormal, elevated insulin levels can make it more difficult to burn stored fat, increase hunger and contribute to stubborn abdominal weight gain.
Stress Response Patterns
Your stress response patterns affect much more than your mood. When your nervous system remains in a constant “fight or flight” state, it can disrupt sleep, influence food cravings, alter hormone regulation and make sustainable weight loss much more challenging.
Poor Sleep
Sleep plays an essential role in metabolism, appetite regulation and energy levels. Even with excellent nutrition, inadequate or poor-quality sleep can make losing weight significantly more difficult.
Gut Health and Inflammation
The digestive system influences nutrient absorption, inflammation, metabolism and hormone regulation. In some patients, improving gut health becomes an important part of supporting healthy weight loss.
Thyroid and Other Factors
Conditions such as thyroid dysfunction, certain medications and other underlying health concerns may also contribute to weight gain. When appropriate, I may recommend lab testing to understand the factors influencing your health.
Our Approach to Weight Loss Is Different
In my experience, you can’t get lasting weight loss unless you understand why your body is holding onto weight in the first place.
Many of my patients have spent years trying every weight loss approach under the sun—yet they still struggle to lose weight or keep it off. That isn’t a sign of failure or a lack of willpower. Often, it’s a sign that something deeper needs attention.
Rather than throwing another one-size fits all diet plan at you, we begin by looking at the systems that regulate metabolism and overall health. This includes looking at hormone balance, blood sugar regulation, stress physiology, sleep quality, gut health, thyroid function, inflammation and other factors that can influence weight.
Nutrition is an important part of every program we do, and yes, we ask you to make changes in your diet, but it’s only one piece of the picture. My bigger-picture goal is to help you build a healthier body that naturally supports a healthy weight—not simply help you lose pounds as quickly as possible. It’s “get healthy to lose weight” versus the other way around.
When we work together to identify and address the factors contributing to weight gain, you will find that healthy habits become easier to maintain, energy improves and you begin feeling more like your best self.
What to Expect in a Thrive Weight Loss Program
Successful weight loss is not just about finding the perfect diet – though we will indeed help you fine tune exactly what foods work for you. But n my experience successful weight loss needs to go beyond food intake – so, it’s about creating a plan that addresses the totality of your body’s needs while providing the structure, accountability and support to help you stay on track.
When you work with our team, we don’t just hand you a meal plan and send you on your way. We work with you over time to understand what’s driving your weight gain, monitor your progress and make thoughtful adjustments as your body changes.
Depending on your situation, your program may include:
Comprehensive Health Assessment
We begin with a thorough review of your health – including history, current symptoms and lifestyle factors. We perform extensive lab testing to identify underlying contributors such as insulin resistance, hormone imbalances, gut dysfunction and thyroid issues.
Nutrition That supports Your Life
Rather than following a one-size-fits-all diet, we help you identify the foods that best support your unique physiology. By improving both metabolic health and gut health, we can build a sustainable foundation that supports lasting weight loss and better overall health.
Ongoing Coaching and Accountability
One of the biggest reasons diets fail is that people are left to figure everything out on their own. Throughout your program, you’ll receive ongoing guidance, education and accountability so that challenges can be addressed before they become setbacks.
Adjusting as Your Body Changes
Your body isn’t static, and your treatment plan shouldn’t be either. As your metabolism, symptoms and weight begin to change, we’ll continue refining your program so you can keep making meaningful progress while supporting your long-term health.
Building a Healthier Body
Although many people initially come to Thrive to lose weight, my goal is much broader than helping you reach a number on the scale. I want to help you build a healthier body that naturally supports a healthy weight while improving your long-term health and quality of life.
As your metabolism becomes healthier and inflammation begins to decrease, we expect you to see benefits that extend well beyond weight loss. These often include:
- More consistent energy throughout the day
- Fewer food cravings
- Better sleep
- Improved digestion
- More stable mood and stress resilience
- Healthier blood sugar regulation
- Greater confidence in maintaining healthy habits
One of the most rewarding parts of my work is seeing patients realize that they don’t just weigh less—they FEEL better. They have more energy for their families, greater confidence in their health and a renewed sense of control over their future.
That’s why my focus has never been simply helping you shed pounds. It’s helping you build the foundation for better health in the years and decades ahead.
“I tried everything – different diets, medications, you name it. My weight wouldn’t budge…I felt defeated and exhausted…Then I found Thrive Naturopathic. The team there is amazing! They listened carefully to all my symptoms, from the weight gain to the skin issues. It felt like they genuinely cared about helping me feel better.
After working with them, they created a personalized approach just for me. It wasn’t a quick fix, but slowly but surely, things started to change. I started losing weight…but the best part? I have so much more energy now. It feels like I have a whole new lease on life!”

“Before I found Thrive Naturopathic, I was on a hamster wheel with my weight loss journey. I felt like I was throwing everything at the wall to see what would stick, what would work… I highly recommend Dr. Christopher Johnson and Thrive Naturopathic to any and all.
— Yvette S., Google Review
“I highly recommend Dr. Johnson, a functional naturopathic doctor who focuses on finding the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. As a retired critical care nurse, I was dealing with atrial fibrillation and weight issues but wasn’t comfortable with conventional medical approaches. In seven months with him, I’ve lost over forty pounds, my atrial fib episodes are almost completely gone, I’m sleeping much better, and my mental health has improved significantly.”

Ready to Understand What's Really Holding You Back?
If you’ve tried diet after diet without lasting success, it may be time to look beyond calories alone. Our goal isn’t simply to help you lose weight—it’s to help you build a healthier body that naturally supports a healthy weight. If you’re ready to take that next step, we’d love to learn more about your goals.
Frequently Asked Questions About Holistic Weight Loss Programs
There are many reasons your body may resist weight loss despite your best efforts. Hormonal changes, insulin resistance, imbalanced stress-response patterns, poor sleep, gut health, inflammation and other factors can all influence metabolism. One of the first goals of our programs is to understand which of these factors may be affecting you so we can create a more effective plan.
Not at all. Although many of my patients are women experiencing weight gain during perimenopause or menopause, we also work with men and younger adults who are struggling with weight gain, insulin resistance, metabolic health and other underlying contributors to weight loss resistance.
Every person’s situation is different, so there’s no way to accurately predict how quickly weight loss will occur. Rather than focusing only on rapid weight loss, my goal is to help you build a healthier body that naturally supports a healthy weight while improving your long-term health. It’s always “get healthy to lose weight” (not the other way around).
Meaningful, lasting weight loss usually requires meaningful changes in nutrition. While every program is individualized, most patients begin with a more structured nutrition plan designed to stabilize metabolism, improve blood sugar regulation and reduce inflammation. As your health improves, your diet can often become more flexible, but my goal is never to help you “get through a diet”—it’s to help you develop eating habits that support your health for the rest of your life.
It’s also important to understand that the foods you eat don’t just affect your blood sugar and metabolism – they also affect the health of your gut (digestive tract) and by extension your immune system – since your gut and immune system are completely connected (actually physically touching). If you eat foods that irritate your gut, your immune system will react and send inflammatory signals throughout the body – causing fatigue, headaches, joint pain, hormonal issues, etc.
Every patient in our programs complete comprehensive laboratory testing because we don’t believe in guessing. Your Program Evaluation helps determine which tests are most appropriate for your situation, allowing us to better understand the factors influencing your metabolism, hormones, blood sugar regulation, gut health, inflammation and overall health. This information helps us build a treatment plan that’s based on your physiology rather than assumptions.
GLP-1 medications can be very helpful for some individuals, and there are situations where they may be appropriate. However, medications alone don’t address many of the underlying factors that contribute to weight gain, such as nutrition, metabolic health, gut health, chronic inflammation, stress physiology and long-term lifestyle habits.
My goal is to help you build a healthier body that naturally supports a healthy weight while improving your overall health. For patients who are willing to make meaningful lifestyle changes, this approach often leads to benefits that extend well beyond weight loss—including better energy, improved metabolic health and a stronger foundation for long-term wellness.
