Personalized perimenopause care in Northern Virginia
Weight gain, fatigue and shifting hormones can make you feel “off” in ways that are hard to explain.
We help you understand what’s driving these changes and give you a clear path toward feeling like yourself again.
Five months ago, when I started with Dr. Johnson at Thrive Naturopathic, I wasn’t feeling like myself at all. My energy was low, my mood was off, and I just knew something wasn’t right. It was frustrating and honestly a little discouraging.
Today, I can say I feel like a completely different person. My energy is back, my mood has lifted, and for the first time in a long time, I genuinely feel good—inside and out. It’s hard to put into words how much that means.
Dr. Johnson didn’t just treat symptoms—he listened, he cared, and he guided me every step of the way. I never felt like just another patient. I felt supported, understood, and truly taken care of.
This journey has been life-changing for me. I’m beyond grateful, and I can honestly say this program has done what feels like miracles in my life.
If you’re struggling or unsure, I hope my story encourages you to take that first step. It might just change everything for you, too.
After struggling with persistent health issue for months, I finally feel like myself again. Dr. Johnson took the time to look at the root cause of my symptoms rather than just treating them superficially. Dr. Johnson's approach was thoughtful, thorough, and personalized, and I always felt heard and supported throughout the process.
I’m so grateful for the progress I’ve made and would highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic to anyone!
I went to Thrive Naturopathic in 2024 because I was struggling with my health and wasn’t getting answers from Western medicine. I was told everything was “fine” and that it was likely just anxiety, so I turned to Thrive hoping for real answers based on their positive reviews.
I stayed in the program for about 8 months before deciding to leave. In my experience, the program mainly focused on dietary changes and brain training techniques. While those can be helpful, the cost is extremely high for what’s actually being offered. The initial testing also felt very basic- no different from what you’d get at a standard doctor’s appointment, which is disappointing given how much they charge.
After leaving, I went to another holistic practitioner who did much more extensive bloodwork. That’s when I found out I actually had underlying issues that Thrive couldn't indentify. I started feeling better within two weeks of proper treatment, whereas at Thrive I felt worse over time and was repeatedly told to “be patient” and that “healing doesn’t happen overnight.” Again, I waited 8 months before I decided to leave.
I strongly encourage others to do thorough research before committing to such an expensive program. For comparison, my current holistic provider charges significantly less and provided far more thorough care.
This experience definitely made me more cautious about trusting online reviews.
This program provides so much helpful advice and the staff are incredibly supportive. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, and Halicia were AMAZING to work with - they are true professionals that really care! Joy was always quick to respond and send remedies along the way.
I am so glad I signed up for the program I did; I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic for anyone dealing with diminished health!
My time at Thrive has fundamentally changed my relationship with food, stressors, and how I view my body and overall health. I’ve never felt more understood or supported, and I’m genuinely grateful for the impact they’ve had on my life. Highly recommend!
When I reached out to Thrive last year, I suffered from poor sleep, weight gain, low energy, and increased irritability. I have a great wife and family, yet when I showed up on Thrive’s doorstep I was far from being the husband and father they deserved. I’ve always been in good shape both physically and mentally, but life with four young kids (my oldest is 7) caused me to cut corners with my diet and exercise, and I was beginning to pay a steep price for it. Something had to change.
That’s when I reached out to Dr. Chris and his team at Thrive Naturopathic. The program they’ve developed and the support they provided is nothing less than outstanding! The program is broken down into very manageable blocks with measurable and attainable goals and objectives. And best of all, they assign a coach to help with any extra motivation or information you may need along the way.
I recommend that you call them to learn more about the program to determine if it’s a good fit for you. I will tell you that one year later I have a better overall attitude, more energy, better sleep and less weight—all thanks to Thrive. My only advice is that you don’t wait as long as I did to make that call. Good luck!
Working with Thrive changed everything. Their naturopath truly took the time to get to the root cause of my issues, not just mask the symptoms. I’ve learned how to take better care of myself in a way that feels sustainable and supportive of my long term health. Now, I move through my days with so much more energy and clarity. My digestion has improved drastically, and I finally feel like myself again.
I’m beyond grateful for Thrive Naturopathic. They care deeply and it shows. This program was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health and well being.
As each week passed, I lost weight, had more energy, and, most importantly, gained confidence in myself. By the fall, I lost 55 pounds, and lowered my cholesterol by nearly 100 points. My doctors took me off all of the medications that they had previously told me I would be on for the rest of my life. When I asked these doctors why, they said it was because I made lifestyle changes that 99.9 percent of people don’t make.
Today, I still largely stick to my new healthy diet. I exercise regularly and more recently I started playing hockey again, something I never thought would be possible. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, Halicia, and the rest of the team helped me become a better dad, husband, son, brother, friend, and co-worker. I’m forever grateful and cannot say enough positive things about Thrive Naturopathic.
I knew that traditional medicine wouldn't work for me anymore so I started looking into alternatives. Then I found Thrive Naturopathic. The team there is amazing! They listened carefully to all my symptoms, from the weight gain to the skin issues. It felt like they genuinely cared about helping me feel better.
After working with them, they created a personalized approach just for me. It wasn't a quick fix, but slowly but surely, things started to change. I started losing weight, and for the first time in years, I got my period back! My eczema completely cleared up, and my acne is almost gone. But the best part? I have so much more energy now. It feels like I have a whole new lease on life!
If you're struggling with PCOS and feel like nothing is working, I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic. They took the time to understand my unique situation and helped me get back to feeling like myself again. Thank you, Thrive Naturopathic!

Why You Feel So “Off” During Perimenopause
Content by Dr. Christopher Johnson, ND | Founder, Thrive Naturopathic
Perimenopause affects far more than your menstrual cycle. Many times you notice changes in sleep, mood, energy, stress tolerance and metabolism — in the years before menopause – often starting in your 40s or even late 30s.
One month may feel manageable, while the next brings fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, weight gain or worsening PMS symptoms. These shifts can feel confusing — especially when lab work looks “normal.”
Over they years, working with several thousand women, what I’ve realized is that the hormonal changes that occur in perimenopause are not the whole picture. They do matter of course, but these hormonal shifts take place in the context of more foundational aspects of the body that are often out of balance.
So, rather than focusing only on hormone levels, I also look at the underlying factors influencing how your body is adapting to this transition — including your stress-response patterns, metabolic health, inflammation and gut/microbiome health.
Common Perimenopause Symptoms We Help Address
Perimenopause affects every woman differently. Some women experience obvious hormonal symptoms, while others primarily notice changes in sleep, stress tolerance, mood, energy or metabolism.
Sleep disruption
Mood changes
Fatigue
Brain fog
PMS worsening
Irregular cycles
Weight gain
Hot flashes
Stress intolerance
Low motivation
Bloating
Blood sugar swings
A More Comprehensive Approach to Perimenopause
Many approaches to perimenopause focus primarily on replacing hormones or suppressing symptoms.
Over nearly two decades in practice, I’ve worked with thousands of women navigating hormonal and metabolic changes during midlife. And what I’ve learned is unless you address the underlying issues in the fundamental systems – such as the stress-response/nervous system, the microbiome and the detoxification/hormone modifying organs such as the liver – women never really get back to feeling their best.
We also need to think about the inter-connectedness of our systems. Sleep affects stress hormones. Stress affects blood sugar. Blood sugar influences ovarian signaling, inflammation and weight regulation. Everything is connected.
Rather than relying on a quick-fix or one-size-fits-all approach, we guide women through a structured, supportive process designed to help balance fundamental systems, increase energy and resilience, improve metabolic health and restore your overall quality of life.
For many women, the goal is not simply reducing symptoms — it is feeling healthier, stronger and more like themselves again.
Creating Meaningful, Lasting Change Through Program-Based Care
If you’re struggling with perimenopause you may have already tried piecing things together on your own — changing supplements, adjusting diets, searching for answers online or bouncing between disconnected recommendations. While some interventions may help temporarily, lasting improvement often requires a more structured and comprehensive approach.
At Thrive Naturopathic, care is designed around a guided, program-based model that allows us to look more deeply at the factors influencing hormone balance, metabolism, stress resilience, sleep and overall health over time. Rather than relying on isolated recommendations or short visits, we work with you through a more organized and supportive process designed to create meaningful, sustainable change.
Core elements typically include nutrition and lifestyle guidance, functional lab testing, balancing stress-response patterns and individualized supplementation strategies tailored to your specific biochemistry.
Throughout the process, you receive ongoing support, accountability and guidance as changes are implemented over time. The goal is not simply symptom management, but helping you build a stronger foundation for long-term energy, resilience and metabolic health.
A Different Way to Think About Perimenopause
Perimenopause is often discussed primarily as a hormone problem — but many women notice changes that affect far more than just their cycle. Sleep, stress resilience, metabolism, mood, energy and overall wellbeing can all begin to shift during this transition.
In this short video, I explain why supporting your body’s stress-response, metabolic and regulatory systems helps you feel healthier, stronger and more resilient during perimenopause.

I have energy to accomplish my daily tasks, tools for coping with anxiety and reducing future anxiety as well. In addition, I have few, if any perimenopause symptoms anymore.

Frequently Asked Questions About Perimenopause
Can perimenopause start before menopause?
Yes. Perimenopause often begins years before menopause officially occurs. Many women first notice subtle changes in sleep, mood, stress tolerance, metabolism or menstrual cycles during their late 30s or 40s.
Why do I suddenly feel so different?
Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause can affect far more than reproductive health. Sleep, energy, mood, resilience, stress physiology and metabolic health can all shift during this transition — sometimes in ways that feel confusing or difficult to explain.
Can perimenopause cause weight gain?
Yes. Many women notice increasing difficulty maintaining weight during perimenopause, particularly around the midsection. Changes in stress hormones, sleep quality, insulin sensitivity and inflammation may all contribute.
Why do my symptoms seem inconsistent from month to month?
Hormone fluctuations during perimenopause are often irregular and unpredictable. Some months may feel manageable, while others bring fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, PMS symptoms or hot flashes seemingly out of nowhere.
Do hormone levels always show perimenopause on lab testing?
Not always. Hormone levels can fluctuate significantly during perimenopause, which means standard lab testing may appear “normal” even when symptoms are very real. This is one reason why symptoms, health history and broader patterns matter so much.
What makes Thrive Naturopathic different?
