Many people think of insulin resistance, prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes as isolated conditions affecting blood sugar. I’ve found they are often part of a much broader metabolic process that can begin years before blood sugar levels become abnormal.

Long before you’re diagnosed with diabetes, insulin levels may already be elevated – as the body works harder to keep blood sugar under control. Over time, this can lead to weight gain—particularly around the abdomen—as well as increased inflammation, unhealthy cholesterol patterns, fatty liver, elevated blood pressure and other features of metabolic syndrome.
