Holistic Weight Loss: Understanding the Root Causes of Weight Gain
Healthy eating and regular exercise matter—but they don’t always explain why weight becomes harder to lose. A holistic approach helps uncover the underlying factors that may be standing in the way of lasting success.

Virtual and In-Person Appointments Available
Holistic weight loss is about more than just eating less and exercising more. It is a way of understanding and addressing the underlying factors that make losing weight more difficult. While healthy nutrition and regular physical activity are essential for weight loss, we also have to consider hormones, insulin resistance, stress response patterns, poor sleep and gut health – as these can also significantly affect how your body regulates metabolism. Rather than focusing only on calories or the number on the scale, a holistic approach seeks to improve the systems that support long-term health. For many people, this not only makes weight loss more achievable, but also leads to better energy, improved metabolic health and a greater sense of well-being.
Why So Many People Struggle to Lose Weight

Many people think weight loss comes down to: eat less/healthy and exercise more. And while proper nutrition and physical activity are essential, in my experience successful, lasting weight loss is often more complex than that.
Over the years, I’ve worked with people across a wide spectrum. Some know they need help building healthier habits and creating a sustainable routine. Others are making a genuine effort but have unknowingly been following advice that isn’t well suited to their body or their goals. And then there are people who are already eating really, really strictly, exercising like crazy and still find themselves frustrated by stubborn weight gain.
Although these situations look very different on the surface, they share one important lesson: lasting weight loss requires more than simply trying harder. It requires understanding what your body needs, applying that knowledge consistently and identifying any underlying factors that may be standing in your way.
That is what a holistic approach is designed to do.
What Does Holistic Weight Loss Really Mean?
The word holistic has been used so often in health care that it has almost lost its meaning. To me, holistic weight loss doesn’t mean just following a special diet, taking a handful of supplements or relying on one “magic bullet.” It means understanding the many factors that influence your ability to lose weight, then adopting a practical plan that addresses them together.
Healthy eating and regular exercise remain very important. But over the years, I’ve found long-term success usually depends on more than just this. Are you building muscle as you get older? Are your stress-response patterns making it hard to maintain healthy habits? Could changing hormones, insulin resistance or poor sleep be changing the equation?
Every person is different. Some people simply need a better roadmap and the accountability to follow through. Others need a deeper evaluation to uncover obstacles that aren’t immediately obvious. My goal is always the same: to help you understand what’s getting in your way and give you a clear, sustainable path forward (along with support and structure to keep you on the path).
Before looking at nutrition, exercise or supplements, let’s look at the common factors that can make weight loss more difficult in the first place.
The Most Common Reasons Weight Loss Becomes More Difficult
One of the biggest mistakes I see is assuming there’s a single reason someone struggles to lose weight. In reality, lasting weight loss is influenced by many interconnected systems. Improving just one area can certainly help, but when several factors are working against you at the same time, progress often slows or stops altogether.
Below are some of the most common patterns I’ve seen in practice.
Nutrition: More Than Just Eating "Healthy"
I hear over and over, “I eat healthy – but I’m still gaining weight”
Sometimes that’s true (though honestly, not always). Sometimes you are indeed working hard but following advice that isn’t well matched to your needs. A helpful hint – conventional wisdom isn’t getting most of us over the goal line.
Healthy eating is about consuming foods that supports your body’s specific needs – including your gut and immune system, your hormonal profile and phase of life.
Exercise: The Right Kind at the Right Time
Exercise is one of the best investments you can make in your health, but not all exercise has the same effect on metabolism. For many adults, particularly during midlife, building and maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important. Strength training, daily movement and recovery often matter just as much as high-intensity workouts.
Your hormonal body type also affects which types of exercise work best to help balance your system. Some people need more or less cardio or strength training.
Stress Response and the Nervous System
Your stress response doesn’t simply affect how you feel. It can influence sleep, food choices/cravings, energy levels and the habits that determine long-term success. A chronically activated stress response makes healthy lifestyle changes much harder to sustain.
One of the most rewarding parts of my work is helping you build a healthier, more resilient nervous system. With this – it becomes easier to adopt healthier daily habits. And reducing cortisol also has a direct benefit on your weight loss goals.
Hormones and Metabolism
As you get older, changing hormones, insulin resistance and the gradual loss of muscle can all make weight loss more challenging. This is particularly common during perimenopause and menopause, but it can affect men as well.
Understanding these changes helps us work with your body instead of constantly feeling like you’re fighting against it. Balanced hormones are essential for weight loss.
Sleep and Recovery
Poor sleep affects much more than energy. It influences hunger, food cravings, recovery from exercise and many of the hormones involved in appetite and metabolism. Improving sleep is often one of the simplest ways to support long-term weight loss and overall health.
Of course the #1 influence on sleep is your stress response. So, you can see how this is all tied together.
What Should a Holistic Weight Loss Program Include?
If lasting weight loss depends on more than one factor, then the solution should be more than a diet alone.
A truly holistic weight loss program should help you develop healthier habits, understand how your body works and identify the factors that may be preventing progress. Rather than focusing on quick fixes, it should provide a practical roadmap that helps you improve your health over months and years, not just a few weeks.
In my practice, we combine education, individualized recommendations and ongoing support. Knowledge is important, but lasting change happens when that knowledge is consistently put into practice. You can learn more about our weight loss programs here.
A Strong Foundation of Nutrition and Movement
Healthy eating and regular physical activity remain essential for healthy weight loss. But remember – the goal isn’t just to shed pounds. To lose weight successfully and sustainably you have to above all else, get your body healthy.
Proper nutrition and movement are first and foremost about improving your body’s function – reducing inflammation, balancing hormones, etc. Weight loss occurs as a consequence of this. The food you eat while on a “diet” is the same food you’ll eat for the next 50 years – it’s not a temporary thing – its what you need to be healthy.
Looking Beyond Symptoms to your whole health
Sometimes weight gain is simply the result of habits that need to change. Other times, it reflects deeper issues such as insulin resistance, hormonal changes, poor sleep or an imbalanced stress response. Identifying those patterns helps us focus our efforts where they’re most likely to make a difference.
For instance, if you have sweet cravings it will be difficult to sustainably lose weight. You have to first address the sweet cravings by balancing your brain. Sweet cravings are just the brain saying “make me happy” – its not an actual, biological need. Once you learn to keep the brain happy without sweets, you are empowered to eat well.
Coaching, Accountability and Long-Term Support
One of the biggest reasons people struggle isn’t always a lack of information. It’s knowing how to implement this and staying consistent long enough for healthy habits to become part of everyday life.
That’s why I believe education works best when it’s paired with coaching, accountability and regular follow-up. Small improvements made consistently over time almost always outperform short bursts of motivation.
An Approach That Evolves as Your Health Improves
Lasting weight loss is rarely a straight line. That’s because getting healthy is a dynamic process – getting your body to shift and change. As your metabolism, energy, stress levels and overall health begin to improve, new opportunities and new challenges often emerge.
My goal isn’t simply to help you lose weight—it’s to help you develop the knowledge, confidence and habits to continue moving toward better health.
Putting it All Together
Holistic weight loss isn’t a specific diet or supplement. It’s a way of approaching weight loss that recognizes the many factors influencing body weight and overall health. While healthy eating and exercise remain the foundation, sustainable success requires looking at sleep, stress, hormones, metabolism and other aspects of health as well.
The goal isn’t simply to lose weight as quickly as possible. It’s to create healthier habits, address obstacles that may be standing in your way and build a foundation that supports both a healthier weight and better long-term health.
Every person’s situation is different, which is why a holistic approach focuses on understanding the whole picture rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all solution.
