I don’t usually write reviews like this, but I felt I had to share my experience because it truly means so much to me.

Five months ago, when I started with Dr. Johnson at Thrive Naturopathic, I wasn’t feeling like myself at all. My energy was low, my mood was off, and I just knew something wasn’t right. It was frustrating and honestly a little discouraging.

Today, I can say I feel like a completely different person. My energy is back, my mood has lifted, and for the first time in a long time, I genuinely feel good—inside and out. It’s hard to put into words how much that means.

Dr. Johnson didn’t just treat symptoms—he listened, he cared, and he guided me every step of the way. I never felt like just another patient. I felt supported, understood, and truly taken care of.

This journey has been life-changing for me. I’m beyond grateful, and I can honestly say this program has done what feels like miracles in my life.

If you’re struggling or unsure, I hope my story encourages you to take that first step. It might just change everything for you, too.

Working with Dr. Johnson and Halicia has been truly life-changing. As someone who works in medicine, I was initially skeptical about the benefits of naturopathic and holistic care, but my perspective has completely changed.

After struggling with persistent health issue for months, I finally feel like myself again. Dr. Johnson took the time to look at the root cause of my symptoms rather than just treating them superficially. Dr. Johnson's approach was thoughtful, thorough, and personalized, and I always felt heard and supported throughout the process.

I’m so grateful for the progress I’ve made and would highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic to anyone!

I debated for a long time about writing this review, but I finally decided to share my experience.

I went to Thrive Naturopathic in 2024 because I was struggling with my health and wasn’t getting answers from Western medicine. I was told everything was “fine” and that it was likely just anxiety, so I turned to Thrive hoping for real answers based on their positive reviews.

I stayed in the program for about 8 months before deciding to leave. In my experience, the program mainly focused on dietary changes and brain training techniques. While those can be helpful, the cost is extremely high for what’s actually being offered. The initial testing also felt very basic- no different from what you’d get at a standard doctor’s appointment, which is disappointing given how much they charge.

After leaving, I went to another holistic practitioner who did much more extensive bloodwork. That’s when I found out I actually had underlying issues that Thrive couldn't indentify. I started feeling better within two weeks of proper treatment, whereas at Thrive I felt worse over time and was repeatedly told to “be patient” and that “healing doesn’t happen overnight.” Again, I waited 8 months before I decided to leave.

I strongly encourage others to do thorough research before committing to such an expensive program. For comparison, my current holistic provider charges significantly less and provided far more thorough care.

This experience definitely made me more cautious about trusting online reviews.

My wife and I wanted to treat the root cause of our health issues, not just mask symptoms with prescriptions. After researching functional medicine, we chose Thrive Naturopathic, and it was the best decision we could have made. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, and Halicia Jones provided the most comprehensive blood screening we’ve ever had. Through their guidance on diet, fitness, and mindfulness, we’ve both lost weight, gained energy, and feel empowered as we approach our 60s. We finally have the tools to age gracefully without 'punishing' ourselves. I cannot overstate the benefits of Thrive’s program.

What a great experience it has been to be a patient of Thrive Naturopathic! Even though I traveled a lot and wasn't able to stick to the program 100 percent, I have still had remarkable success. Before the program, I had constant headaches, joint pain, hand tremors, lots of hot flashes, low immune function (I frequently caught colds that took 3-4 weeks to recover from), overly sensitive skin (very dry and itchy), mucus in the back of my throat (I was constantly "clearing my throat"), as well as depression and anxiety. When I was home and it was easier to really stick with the program, all those things were MUCH better. As I write this, I still have to work on the depression and anxiety; I traveled the better part of the past 4 months, helping with fussy newborn babies and not getting much sleep, so I need to focus on my mental health now. All of the other symptoms are pretty much resolved, even with all the recent stress.

This program provides so much helpful advice and the staff are incredibly supportive. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, and Halicia were AMAZING to work with - they are true professionals that really care! Joy was always quick to respond and send remedies along the way.

I am so glad I signed up for the program I did; I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic for anyone dealing with diminished health!

They helped me get the pain from a chronic condition under control, and I also now feel empowered heading through perimenopause. It's clear the whole team cares about your journey, and I'm grateful my path crossed theirs when it did! Thank you Dr. J., Dr. Fig, and Kortney!

I am incredibly grateful to have found Dr. Johnson and his wellness program. It helped me uncover deep, underlying issues I had been struggling with for years—issues that past doctors never identified because the right questions were never asked. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, and Halicia were not only incredibly attentive, but also compassionate and genuinely invested in my treatment. Even after completing the program, I continue to have access to the resources I need to maintain my progress, which means more to me than I can express.

I had a great experience working with Thrive. My overall well-being improved significantly throughout the program and even my family and friends noticed I seem happier. The different stages of the program made it easy to make lifestyle changes and did not feel overwhelming at all. I felt supported throughout the whole thing. If you're considering giving Thrive a shot I would definitely say to go for it.

It's a big commitment, but I'm happy that I did it. I highly recommend doing it with a partner, makes the elimination portion much easier. The team is supportive and available, highly recommend!

This review has intentionally been a long time coming. I completed the program six months ago and deliberately waited to write a review to ensure the program was still effective. When I signed up with Thrive a year ago, I was looking for a long-term solution rather than a quick fix. I’m happy to say I found it.

When I reached out to Thrive last year, I suffered from poor sleep, weight gain, low energy, and increased irritability. I have a great wife and family, yet when I showed up on Thrive’s doorstep I was far from being the husband and father they deserved. I’ve always been in good shape both physically and mentally, but life with four young kids (my oldest is 7) caused me to cut corners with my diet and exercise, and I was beginning to pay a steep price for it. Something had to change.

That’s when I reached out to Dr. Chris and his team at Thrive Naturopathic. The program they’ve developed and the support they provided is nothing less than outstanding! The program is broken down into very manageable blocks with measurable and attainable goals and objectives. And best of all, they assign a coach to help with any extra motivation or information you may need along the way.

I recommend that you call them to learn more about the program to determine if it’s a good fit for you. I will tell you that one year later I have a better overall attitude, more energy, better sleep and less weight—all thanks to Thrive. My only advice is that you don’t wait as long as I did to make that call. Good luck!

My entire life has been transformed and I finally have vibrant health after completing my program. Everyone at Thrive Naturopathic is an expert in their field of study and their knowledge and framework is the real deal. Before beginning, I was experiencing daily headaches, emotional instability, unexplained weight gain/loss, no appetite, reoccurring sleepless nights, etc. All of this has been resolved through following the program and being held accountable to put in the work required. I would highly recommend and encourage anyone seeking to change their life and health around to consider embarking on this life-changing journey.

I just completed the 6 month program with Thrive Naturopathic, and I feel like a completely different person. Before starting, I was struggling just to get through the day, low energy, constant brain fog, and ongoing digestive issues had put my life on pause. I could hardly function, and it felt like no one truly understood what I was going through.

Working with Thrive changed everything. Their naturopath truly took the time to get to the root cause of my issues, not just mask the symptoms. I’ve learned how to take better care of myself in a way that feels sustainable and supportive of my long term health. Now, I move through my days with so much more energy and clarity. My digestion has improved drastically, and I finally feel like myself again.

I’m beyond grateful for Thrive Naturopathic. They care deeply and it shows. This program was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health and well being.

Dr. Johnson and his team completely transformed my life. When I arrived in April 2024, I was dealing with the residual effects of a medical issue that left me on numerous medications. I was overweight, my eating habits were sub-par, and I simply felt awful all of the time. I had been to numerous doctors and specialists who, time after time told me I was medically fine, yet I didn’t have the energy to chase after my toddler, let alone exercise. Dr. Johnson and his team took the time to listen to all of my symptoms and ask many questions. They developed a plan that included a regimented diet, supplements, and various lifestyle changes. The results came quickly.

As each week passed, I lost weight, had more energy, and, most importantly, gained confidence in myself. By the fall, I lost 55 pounds, and lowered my cholesterol by nearly 100 points. My doctors took me off all of the medications that they had previously told me I would be on for the rest of my life. When I asked these doctors why, they said it was because I made lifestyle changes that 99.9 percent of people don’t make.

Today, I still largely stick to my new healthy diet. I exercise regularly and more recently I started playing hockey again, something I never thought would be possible. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig, Halicia, and the rest of the team helped me become a better dad, husband, son, brother, friend, and co-worker. I’m forever grateful and cannot say enough positive things about Thrive Naturopathic.

I recently completed their 6-month program, and the progress I’ve made is truly incredible compared to where I started. Thrive offers a well-rounded and thorough approach—everything from detailed blood panels and holistic supplements to coaching, educational modules, and more. Thrive Naturopathic has been such a blessing in my life. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fig and Halicia were wonderful to work with- they truly care about your overall health and wellbeing. In the last seven months, I saw major improvements in my physical and emotional health- my anxiety, brain fog and high blood pressure each improved- and the knowledge I gained was, and still is, invaluable. The recommended supplements and program modules, with frequent phone calls and zoom appointments truly made me feel supported during each step of the way. Most doctors will rush you in and out of their offices, never truly taking the time to listen to your unique symptoms. The blood tests ordered are often routine tests that do not dig deeper into what may be going on inside of your body. Dr. Johnson and his team are thorough and well educated. They care about you and want to see your health improve. 10/10 recommend!

When I approached Thrive early August of 2023 I had gotten to a low point of energy, motivation and health (very bad GERD) in post menopause and wanted to find a natural way to get healthy again. I had a knee replacement scheduled for Aug 30 so started a month after that when I got off pain meds. With my husband's joint participation we started on the road to recovery thru elimination of different foods each week, a full week of a very easy detox, then built our diet back up one food at a time. It was such an enjoyable experience because the food was so fresh, the seasonings new and delicious, and the recipes so easy. By Christmas I had lost 27 lbs (which I needed to do but was not expecting) and my husband about 12 lbs without trying. We've found that we prefer to eat the way Thrive taught us and are making up our own recipes now. In addition, with their help with different supplements and nootropics, my motivation and energy are back to where I used to be - positive, curious and active. Their monthly coaching calls are wonderful and Halicia was full of positive reinforcement and helped me navigate various changes. And the meetings with Dr Fig or Dr Johnson help you understand how your gut, your hormones and your nervous system play a huge part in your health. It has been such a wonderful adventure, and I hope if you are looking for a healthier lifestyle you will contact the wonderful team at Thrive!

For years, I struggled with PCOS. I tried everything – different diets, medications, you name it. My weight wouldn't budge, my periods were nonexistent, and my skin was a constant battleground with eczema and acne. I felt defeated and exhausted.

I knew that traditional medicine wouldn't work for me anymore so I started looking into alternatives. Then I found Thrive Naturopathic. The team there is amazing! They listened carefully to all my symptoms, from the weight gain to the skin issues. It felt like they genuinely cared about helping me feel better.

After working with them, they created a personalized approach just for me. It wasn't a quick fix, but slowly but surely, things started to change. I started losing weight, and for the first time in years, I got my period back! My eczema completely cleared up, and my acne is almost gone. But the best part? I have so much more energy now. It feels like I have a whole new lease on life!

If you're struggling with PCOS and feel like nothing is working, I highly recommend Thrive Naturopathic. They took the time to understand my unique situation and helped me get back to feeling like myself again. Thank you, Thrive Naturopathic!

All members of Thrive have great communication skills, are knowledgeable and flexible. I came to Thrive with multiple concerns such as fatigue, brain fog, body aches and anxiety and the Thrive team helped me with all of them. The traditional doctors were quite helpless when it came to these symptoms. I remember that my doctor would tell me that he did not know what was wrong with me and I seemed healthy. Once I enrolled in the Thrive program and started implementing homeopathy, supplements and diet changes I felt much better within several weeks and continue to do so. I am very grateful to Dr. Johnson and his team and look forward to continuing our relationship.

Thrive changed my life. I was struggling with several autoimmune and health issues. I wanted to regain so.e control and feel like myself again. I signed up for a 6 month course and although the diet and lifestyle changes were hard, the program was easy to follow and I saw immediate improvements that only got better over time. 8 months later, I still feel much better, having overcome around 75% of my health challenges. I've learned valuable information about how different foods and habits were making things worse and I know it's a learning journey and I hope to continue to improve. It does take commitment and dedication but I was at my wits end and needed support and guidance to make lasting change. I'm glad I prioritized my health and would highly recommend Dr. Johnson and his team. I am so grateful for their highly personalized approach.

Dr. Johnson and his team at Thrive Naturopathic were wonderful to work with. Their program helped me learn the tools needed to get myself back on track with a healthier lifestyle. In the past 7 months working with Thrive, I have naturally lost 20 pounds, my health has improved significantly, I feel better and sleep better, I am less stressed, and my digestive symptoms I was experiencing are very much improved. When I started with Thrive, my lab work showed some levels outside of the normal range, which were causing me concern. My most recent labs showed, not just improvement to within normal, but they showed really great levels. I am now much more aware of what I consume and how to properly take care of my body through a natural, healthier lifestyle. Many primary care doctors don’t ever seem to take the time to listen to you, to really know or care what is causing your symptoms. They just want to give you a pill for everything. Dr. Johnson takes the time to listen to your symptoms, run the right labs, discuss the results with you, and develop a plan to address the causes of your symptoms and abnormal levels. His team then makes adjustments to your plan, as needed, to help you reach your goals. I could not be more pleased with my results and would definitely recommend Dr. Johnson and the Thrive Naturopathic team for a more natural approach to your health needs.

When You Don't Feel Like Yourself Anymore

Content by Dr. Christopher Johnson, ND | Founder of Thrive Naturopathic, in Alexandria, VA

Most people don’t schedule an appointment with me because they think they have a “stress response problem.”

Instead, they say things like:

“I just don’t feel strong in my body anymore.”
“My sleep has gotten really off.”
“Everything feels harder than it used to.”
“I’m just not as present and enjoying life like I used to.”
“I don’t recover from stressful days as quickly anymore.”
“I’ve tried eating better, exercising and taking supplements, but something still isn’t right.”

Sometimes they put it even more simply.

“I just don’t feel like myself anymore.”

That sentence has stayed with me over the years because it captures something much deeper than any individual symptom.

By the time someone walks into my Alexandria office (or joins me for a secure Zoom visit), they may be experiencing poor sleep, digestive problems, hormone changes, fatigue, anxiety, brain fog or weight gain. While these symptoms can seem unrelated, I’ve often found they are connected by something much more fundamental:

The way the body responds to stress.

Your Stress Response Pattern Is More Important Than the Stress Itself

When I ask my patients about “stress”, what they almost always talk about are external circumstances in their life – stressful job/workplace, hectic schedule, lots of responsibilities, personal life issues, etc..

And those situations certainly do matter and need to be considered.

But in nearly two decades in practice, I have come to understand that the more important question is:

How is your body internally responding to these stressors?

Two people can experience remarkably similar circumstances yet have very different physical responses. One adapts and recovers relatively quickly. The other develops insomnia, digestive problems, hormone imbalance, persistent fatigue or begins feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

Why?

The answer has to do with our own internal stress response patterns.

These Patterns Begin Long Before Symptoms Appear

This is one of the most important concepts I want you to understand.

In my experience, most of our nervous system patterns begin long before our symptoms ever develop. In fact, most are present from the very beginning.

The problem is we are unaware of them – we just think of these response patterns as natural, inevitable – it’s simply how we interact with the world and is part of our personality. The patterns are so ingrained, we consider them an objective lens into reality – we think that how we see the world, is how the world really is.

The problem is these patterns – though they serve us in many ways – are usually at least somewhat “out of tune”. Even without us knowing, they are causing friction in our bodies – sending signals to our body that cause imbalance.

For many years, the body is often able to compensate remarkably well. Then life happens.

Hormones begin to change. Work becomes more demanding. Sleep becomes lighter.

Relationships become more complex. An illness occurs. A significant life event happens.

Eventually, the body’s ability to compensate begins to decline.

What appears to be a “new” health problem in your forties, fifties or sixties may actually represent patterns that have existed quietly for much of your life.

Recognizing these patterns often changes the way we think about healing.

The Encouraging News: These Patterns Can Change

If this were simply the way you were wired forever, this story wouldn’t have such a happy ending.

Fortunately, that’s not what I’ve found to be true.

The great joy of my career has been repeatedly seeing long-standing patterns like this begin to shift in patients – to remarkable consequence.

Symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, insomnia, gastrointestinal complaints, low back pain and more – begin to seriously change. These are not things most people associate with “stress” or your stress-response.

And people often do not describe these changes using medical terminology or even mentioning the symptoms themselves (which have improved substantially).

Instead, they say things like:

  • “I finally feel like myself again.”
  • “I have my joy back”
  • “I’m able to be the husband/wife I want to be”
  • “I’m able to be the father/mother I want to be”
  • “I’m sleeping through the night.”
  • “I feel calmer without trying so hard.”
  • “I can handle things that used to overwhelm me.”

To me, these changes represent far more than symptom relief.

They reflect shifts that are fundamental to how you feel and how you experience the world. It is the opposite of “dis-ease” – you are now more “at ease”.

Hear How They Changed Their Stress Response, Sleep and Resilience

Why Resilience Matters for Your Health

When most people hear the word “stress,” they think about mood or emotions.

I think about something much broader.

In my experience, the body’s stress response influences nearly every major physiological system.

When your nervous system remains focused on protection rather than recovery, it can gradually influence:

  • Sleep quality
  • Digestive function
  • Hormone balance
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Energy production
  • Immune function
  • Inflammation
  • Mental clarity
  • Cardiovascular health

This doesn’t mean every illness is caused only by “stress”.

Far from it.

Nutrition, exercise, restorative sleep, meaningful relationships, your physical environment, etc. – all play essential roles in creating and maintaining your health. If you have a balanced stress response but eat junk food all day, never exercise, get inadequate sleep,, etc., you’re not going to be doing very well.

However, the opposite is also true and I see this all the time – you can do everything you think you need to do for good health (diet, exercise, etc.) but if you don’t address your nervous system patterns, you will simply never reach optimal health (and usually not even get close).

Our nervous system is not simply another piece of the puzzle, it is one of the foundations upon which our health depends – and in many cases is the single most important (and often overlooked) aspects of our health.

Imagine Feeling More Like Yourself Again

If you’re tired of simply managing symptoms and want to understand the deeper patterns affecting your health, we’d be happy to learn more about your situation.

How we Help you Restore Resilience and Nervous system balance

Because your stress response patterns affect so many systems in the body, we need to do everything we can to help you bring them into balance.

Therapies and techniques specific to the nervous system are a big part of this, but so too are the more physical and mechanical aspects of your body and health – because these also influence your nervous system – it’s a two-way street.

Therefore, we look at the patterns that have shaped your health over time and identify the factors that may be preventing your body from recovering as well as it could.

Of course, helping you transform your stress response patterns to increase resilience takes time, so we do this in the context of a comprehensive health program (which provides you with all the insight, structure and support needed to get to your goal). All programs include the following:

Brain Training Techniques

One of the foundational aspects to our programs is teaching you specific mind-body techniques to begin to shift stress response patterns. These need to be learned and practiced over time.

Brain-Specific Lab Testing

We perform very sophisticated lab testing involving certain nutrients (vitamins and minerals) which affect the balance of the nervous system and the activity of neurotransmitters.

Individualized Natural Therapies

In addition to supplementing with the nutrients found imbalanced in the lab testing, we also employ other highly personalized natural therapies to help shift nervous system patterns.

Gut and Microbiome Health

The gut and nervous system are in constant communication. The health of your gut and microbiome has a substantial impact on your brain health – and vice versa.

Nutrition and Blood Sugar

Blood sugar instability and dietary patterns can significantly affect the health of your nervous system. We help you find the specific foods and dietary patterns that match your system.

Coaching and Accountability

Developing greater resilience takes time. Ongoing guidance and accountability help you transform short-term improvements into lasting change and give you the structure needed to grow.

The Biochemical Foundation of Stress Recovery

When I look at helping you restore a hyper-vigilant nervous system, I don’t want to be guessing or relying on generic lifestyle advice. Your ability to adapt to stress is strongly driven by your internal biochemistry.

In my practice, we evaluate specific nutritional and biochemical markers that directly influence neurotransmitter synthesis and nervous system balance. By looking at rarely evaluated but strongly evidence-supported markers—such as methylation pathways, histamine levels, and precise zinc-to-copper ratios—we can identify the hidden cellular friction that keeps your body stuck in a state of ‘dis-ease’.

Once we optimize these foundational nutrients, your nervous system can finally shift out of protection mode and back into true, sustainable recovery.

Furthermore, true nervous system restoration requires moving past the standard, cookie-cutter functional medicine protocols you find online. While generic supplement recommendations like Magnesium or Ashwagandha can offer mild, temporary support, they do not address your unique constitutional blueprint.

My approach utilizes highly advanced, micro-dose natural signaling therapies tailored exclusively to your individual symptom pattern. By introducing these highly targeted stimulus protocols, we aim to re-educate your body’s internal regulation systems—helping your nervous system fundamentally shift out of an automated survival state and back into a deep, natural state of ease.

My Goal Isn't Simply to Help You Feel Less Stressed

Many approaches to stress focus primarily on reducing external stressors.

And while we do sometimes need to take measures to reduce or eliminate stressors around us, my goal is to help you develop a more resilient body.

Health is about strength and adaptability – not living life in a bubble.

When resilience improves, many people notice that they:

  • Sleep more deeply.
  • Recover more quickly from stressful situations.
  • Feel calmer throughout the day.
  • Think more clearly.
  • Have more stable energy.
  • Digest food more comfortably.
  • Feel more at ease in their own body.

Those are the kinds of lasting changes I see routinely in my practice.

Frequently Asked Questions About stress, sleep and resilience

Not only can your stress response patterns affect your health, it is virtually certain they are affecting your health. That’s because the fight or flight part of the brain (the limbic system) is continually sending signals down into the body – affecting your digestive tract, your hormone production, cardiovascular system, lung function, etc. The nervous system is like the operating system of your body – running everything behind the scenes. If you want to restore your health and feel vital and strong, balancing your stress response is required.

Many people assume they can’t sleep because they’re under too much stress. While stressful events can certainly contribute, I’ve found that the way your nervous system responds to stress is often even more important than the stress itself.

When your nervous system has difficulty shifting out of a protective or “alert” state, it becomes much harder for your body to transition into the restorative state needed for deep, restful sleep. Some people struggle to fall asleep because their mind won’t slow down. Others fall asleep easily but wake during the night or wake feeling unrefreshed, even after a full night’s sleep.

Over nearly two decades in practice, I’ve found that these patterns often develop gradually and may have been present long before sleep became a problem. Hormonal changes, illness, work demands or other life events can eventually overwhelm the body’s ability to compensate, making sleep disturbances much more noticeable.

While healthy sleep habits, nutrition and addressing medical conditions are all important, I’ve found that improving the nervous system’s ability to adapt and recover is often one of the most important steps toward restoring healthy sleep.

Yes, stress response patterns are one of the major factors affecting hormone balance. You cannot avoid the fact that ovarian function and hormone production change during perimenopause and into menopause, but you can absolutely influence how these changes affect you. Why do some women sail through perimenopause and menopause? There are several factors, but our nervous system/stress response balance is usually at the top or close to it.

Yes. The two primary factors determining the health and function of your digestive tract are: the foods you eat and your nervous system/stress response. The Vagus nerve starts in the brain and descends down into your abdomen where it physically connects with you esophagus, stomach and small and large intestines. Nervous system signals sent from the brain are what drive digestive function.

A very large percentage of our practice population come to us saying “I’ve been to this and that doctor and everyone tells me ‘everything looks fine’ – but I don’t FEEL fine”. That’s because nervous systems imbalances do not show up on routine conventional lab work. We use both innovative testing methods and also various techniques and therapies to understand the imbalances and help you restore your health.

Stress management can be helpful, but what we’re going for is far beyond that – actually TRANSFORMING stress response patterns. Almost like a system “reset” (versus constantly rebooting the system). We want to help you get to a place where your system is in a state of balance and strength and doesn’t require constant work and vigilance to keep it in shape. Now, it does take time to get there – but the benefits are immense and long-lasting.

Most people we work with begin to notice changes in how they feel within a month or two. But to really get to the point where your stress-response patterns are truly transformed – in a long-term sense – it usually takes about a year. If that seems like a long time, remember – your stress response patterns are one of the most important determinants (and in many cases THE single most important determinant) of your long-term health and also how you feel on a day to day basis. Yes, it takes some time and determination, but the rewards are unlike almost anything else you can do for your health.
